The Water Table

A centerpiece table for artists' group Metal and Southend Borough Council, who commissioned the piece for their 'Low Water Garden' at 2008's Hampton Court Flower Show.

The table and six benches, made from sustainably sourced American white oak, were designed to incorporate elements from the garden.

A huge hand drawn cabbage leaf ( a drought tolerant Brassica plant) doubles up as a map of other indigenous low water crops. The list is interspersed with names of the buried tributaries of the River Thames and the names of the Victorian engineers who pioneered the Capital's drainage systems.

In 2009 the table will go on display at Chalkwell Hall, Southend-on-Sea. Its final home. Chalkwell is being redeveloped by Metal as a residential international artists' project space and is being designed to be 'carbon neutral' by the architects at Zed Factory.

This is the 3rd major art table project UHC has successfully completed, and we are seeking new commissions.
